SAFe is an approach for scaling Agile development practices to large, complex projects and programs. It provides a foundation for coordinating and place multiple Agile teams. SAFe corelates and aligns multiple Agile teams, often referred to as “Agile Release Trains” (ARTs), to work together more effectively. SAFe is based on three main levels: Team, Program, and Portfolio.
At the Team level, individual Agile teams work on specific features and deliver working software. Each team generally follows a specific Agile methodology, this can be Scrum, Kanban, or even Scrumban. The teams are self-organizing and cross-functional. The teams are responsible for delivering working software at the end of each iteration, which is usually 2-4 weeks long.
At the Program level, multiple Agile teams work together to deliver an integrated solution. The Program level is where the coordination and alignment of multiple teams happens. It includes Program Increment (PI) Planning. Which is a timeboxed event. (During the Program Increment (PI) Planning) The team will define the program backlog, align on the objectives, and create the PI plan. The Program level includes the Program Kanban. Which serves as a visual representation of the program backlog. The ARTs Kanban that allows the teams to coordinate their work.
At the Portfolio level, the team will make strategic decisions and allocate resources. The portfolio level includes the governance of the program and the alignment with the organization’s strategy. It includes the definition of the Value Stream, the portfolio backlog, and the portfolio Kanban.
Core components of Scaled Agile Framework:
This framework has several core components:
- The Agile Manifesto and its principles: SAFe is based on the Agile manifesto. This emphasizes individuals and interactions, working software, customer collaboration, and responding to change.
- Lean product development: SAFe includes the principles of Lean product development. Which emphasizes the flow of value, the reduction of waste, and the continuous improvement.
- Systems thinking: SAFe includes the principles of systems thinking. This emphasizes the holistic view of the system, the interdependencies, and the feedback loops.
- DevOps: SAFe includes the principles of DevOps, which emphasizes the continuous delivery and the collaboration between development and operations.
Scaled Agile Framework emphasizes these following practices:
- Iterations (timeboxes): SAFe includes timeboxed events. (such as iterations, PI Planning, and demos). This can provide a cadence and a rhythm for the teams.
- Backlogs (product, feature, and capability): SAFe includes backlogs at different levels. (Such as the product backlog, the feature backlog, and the capability backlog). Which provide a clear view of the work to be done.
- Sprint planning: SAFe includes sprint planning. This is the timeboxed event where the team defines the sprint backlog and commits to the sprint objectives.
- Daily stand-ups: SAFe includes daily stand-ups. These are the timeboxed events where the team shares the progress, the obstacles, and the plan for the day.
- Sprint review and retrospective: SAFe includes sprint review and retrospective. Which are the timeboxed events where the team reviews the progress and results. This to plan the improvements.
- Demos: SAFe includes demos, which are the timeboxed events where the team demonstrates the working software to the stakeholders.
- Inspect and adapt: SAFe includes the practice of inspect and adapt. Which is the steady improvement of the process and the practices.
